Set Goals that Stick This Year

Dream Big, Set Goals, Take Action
If your inbox is anything like mine this time of year, it is inundated with emails, newsletters, and articles about setting goals and making New Year’s Resolutions for 2018.
I’m pretty goal-oriented, so I actually appreciate all the advice and wisdom from others when it comes to setting smart goals. Each year, I make a list of goals for the upcoming year. And every year, I tend to fall off the wagon like the majority of the population.

Sometimes it’s only a matter of Semantics

Notice that I’m referring to “goals” rather than New Year’s Resolutions? I like the general concept of NY’s Resolutions — the new beginning, the initial motivation, etc. What I don’t like is that they don’t stick. The farther into the new year that we get, the more likely the attitude becomes, well I haven’t stuck with this goal in weeks, so I’m going to forget it. Huffington Post estimates that only about 8% of people stick to their Resolutions, say what?! The reasons why are all over the board, but mostly it is because the goals set are often too rambunctious and unattainable. Rather than set a goal of: I am going to give up all sugar, try instead: From January 5-January 15 I will not eat any added sugar. By having an end in sight, it makes the goal much less daunting. Once the 10 days without added sugar is up, you can reevaluate and determine whether or not you want to continue.

Take time for Reflection

I would encourage you to take a few moments as we close out 2017 and truly reflect over the past year. Think about the successes and also consider the failures lessons learned. Now, look towards the year ahead and ask yourself where you would like to be in 3 months, 6 months, at year end. What would you like to learn, accomplish, start/stop doing? Write these down (yes, write them down!). Use this guide to set realistic goals. Set yourself up for success by crafting varying levels of goals — some easily attainable and others that require diligent effort. Sometimes the mere satisfaction of achieving a goal and checking it off (make the woosh sound as you check it, helps, I promise!) propels you forward so much so that you attain another one.

Accountability

For accountability, there are a few options. I like to display my goals in a visible place where not only I see them, but my family sees them as well. You could post them on social media and let your IG and/or FB friends keep you accountable. You could even go as far as creating a group of accountability partners (live or on FB) to keep each other accountable and offer motivation along the way.
At the end of the day, you set goals for yourself — to make yourself better. But that doesn’t mean that you have to journey alone.

Friday Five: 5 Things to do for newbies at your gym

It’s that time of year when the gyms are flooded with new people, the trails are being utilized by those that have never set foot out, yoga studios have expanded classes for new students, etc. Ahhh, the first week of the new year, a week full of resolutions focused on change.

I always see/hear a lot of grumbling this time of year from fellow gym-goers about the flood of people crowding the machines, the weights, the pool and about how they “can’t wait until they fall off their resolution wagon.”  

As a fitness enthusiast, I want everyone to find a passion for fitness, even that new guy that’s on my favorite treadmill at the gym. We should all want that. Let’s resolve to welcome newbies and help them stick to their resolutions for a healthy 2017.

Here are 5 easy ways to get started:


Actually say “welcome, nice to see you here.” Be excited!
High Five: you can never go wrong with a high five (unless they leave you hanging– and then,…well, I’m sorry).

Find out if they need any help. Show them how to use the machines. Even as a regular gym-goer, there are certain machines that still scare me (Hello Jacob’s Ladder)

Invite them to your favorite exercise class. Again, it is intimidating to walk into a gym for the first time. A class helps ease people into things in a group setting, offering some camaraderie and ultimately support.

 

Tell them you’ll see them tomorrow: nothing works better than accountability, especially when it comes from a long-time fitness enthusiast/stranger. Just make sure you’re there tomorrow 🙂
