Working out in the summer has its ups and downs. For instance, I love that the sun is up earlier so I can get my morning run in during daylight. However, I don’t like that if I don’t get said run in during the wee morning hours that it’s 100 degrees by the time I get off work.
I also love that most of the outdoor activities that we do in the summer sneakily are mini workouts as well!
This weekend, I finally got to try Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). You guys, if you have not tried it, it is So. Much. Fun. I didn’t even fall off (which surprises certain people that know me!). It is also a great core and arm workout — without you even knowing it!
My debut on the Paddleboard
My blister AKA Badge-of-Fun from my recent paddleboarding and kayaking experiences
I should warn you, if you do too much paddleboarding all at once, you might end up with blisters like I did! I also paddled around the lake in a kayak (also my first time). That was a lot of fun as well and I’ve added both a kayak and a paddleboard to my list of WANTS.
We spend a lot of time at the lake in the summer… jumping off the dock, swimming, playing “keep-away” with the beach ball, etc. all of which equate to a pretty good (non-sweat-filled) workout.
We like to rate eachother’s jumps off the dock — I think this one got me a 9.2
Two weeks ago, my daughters, husband, and I headed to the river and played what we like to call “sand-bar, no-rules soccer.”That is a lot of work! The sand feels hard on the top and just when you think you have your footing to take off at a sprint, you don’t and you just spin out and look silly. Sorry, I don’t have any pictures or videos of that!
What fun summer activities do you do that turn into mini-workouts? Have you tried SUP?

I’m not going to lie, I have this irrational fear of aging. And it’s not all about vanity (though I’m very much not excited for wrinkles, age spots, saggy skin…I’m getting a nervous stomach just listing those!) It’s about so much more than that. First of all, did you know that most YP groups allow members ages 21-40? Soooo, do they just kick you out when you turn 40?! As if turning 40 didn’t have enough gloom surrounding it!
I’m not trying to be rude to anyone at or above age 40, I’m simply talking about my own (irrational) feelings towards aging and ME — me aging. Then, I’m going to talk to you about a product that I’ve been testing to help with some of those vanity items!
On a serious note, I have this feeling that time is running out, that it’s going too fast. Time with my kids, time to be successful (probably should get on that), just time in general. And then there’s this idea that my opinion will no longer matter to people when they need to know what “young people” want (this is why I said irrational fears). For instance, I have a job in community and economic development and am very active in talent initiatives. For a while, I’ve been at the table of people that asked how to recruit/retain people my age. In a couple of years…they won’t want to know what I think because I won’t be a part of the target group anymore. I was at a conference a few weeks ago and the speaker said, “who in here is Gen X? she asked. Yeah, we don’t matter, we kind of disappeared off the list.” Um, okay, so where do we go from here? Well I, for one am going to continue to speak up, share my opinions, and continue to be relevant, perhaps without bragging about my age. Which brings me to…vanity. If I look young, no one will know the wiser, right? Okay, I feel ashamed for even writing that!
I’m the queen of beauty products. I have tried it all from acne products to anti-aging products (some that target both — which I love!) When you read about aging skin, at the top of the list is 1) don’t forget about your neck and chest! and 2) don’t forget about your hands! These areas show aging the fastest, mostly due to sun exposure in our younger days and these areas are most often neglected when in comes to products.
Enter in…Exuviance Age Reverse Hand Rejuvenator available at exuviance.com ($65). This powerful duo helps to restore smoother, firmer, and younger looking hands using a 10% Citric Acid Peel followed by a rejuvenating hand cream.
I grew up outdoors and enjoyed many hours in the sun. While I did use sunscreen, I have to admit that I didn’t put it on my hands. I spent much of my youth working in the hayfield, driving a tractor in the sun all day long. This type of exposure is going to lead me to dark spots on my hands, I just know it. My grandfather had them, my mother has them, so chances are… I’ll buck that trend by taking care of them now, using sunblock on them, using products like this peel, and applying regular anti-aging products just as I do to my face.
Me – putting sunscreen on my hands before heading outdoors!
The acid peel felt invigorating. You apply it with a cotton ball, let it dry and then apply some more. After it dries, apply the Age Reverse Rejuvenating Hand Cream and then…go to bed and let it do its magic! In the morning, simply apply the hand cream once more. I used this every other day (though, you certainly can use it daily). I don’t yet have any noticable spots on my hands, so I can’t tell you if they are lighter or disappeared. What I can tell you is that my hands do feel softer and smoother as the acid peel exfoliates dead skin. I also notice that I need more lotion throughout the day in order to keep that new layer of skin happy. All in all, I think this is a product that I will continue to use and maybe even share with my mom!
***Please note, this post was sponsored by Brandbacker. I received this product complimentary in exchange of my honest review. All opinions are my own.***
Even though I am not ready at all for May to be here, I am ready to sit down with you all and catch up over coffee! I’m linking up with Deborah and Coco for the May edition of the Ultimate Coffee Date Linkup!
If we were having coffee…. You would ask me if I had any summer vacation plans. I would tell you that the day after school gets out for the girls, they are going to go with my mother-in-law to Washington to stay for about 10 days. I’m already anxious about it as I’ve never been away from them for that long and from that distance. I deliberately signed up for a conference at work that will keep my mind occupied for the first 4 days they are gone. The part I didn’t tell you yet, is that said conference is in Las Vegas! My husband is coming with me, so it should be a lot of fun (Plus, it’s halfway to Washington)!
If we were having coffee… you would ask me how my running is coming. I’d confess to you that my miles are way down. I’d tell you that I am SO ready for my husband’s foot to heal so he can run again — thus getting us back on a regular schedule. In case you have forgotten, he has a stress fracture in his foot and has been unable to run for many weeks. He is used to running every. Single. Day. So it’s been like a punch in his gut when I go run. So I’ve been running less. I did do some running while away for work. It was a beautiful location!
If we were having coffee… you would tell me that I’ll be back to running soon enough and that I should pick out a race or two. I would tell you that I just read an article in my Runner’s World about crushing a 5K. I’m inspired and think I’ll give that plan a try!
I better finish up my coffee and get back to work (I am helping family clean and organize for an estate sale).
Do you have any awesome summer plans? If you have children, have you ever been without them for 10 full days?
This is a rather random Friday Five list, but hey, I’m going for it!
For those that suffer from dark circles….
I promise, I’m not getting any kickbacks for plugging this product! This Cover Fx color corrector is AWESOME! I struggle with dark circles under my eyes (Let’s not get into the multitude of reasons why). I’ve tried many products and my previous favorite, which deserves some time in the spotlight as well was Benefit Fake Up. But this—Cover Fx stick in peach, absolutely erases my dark circles. Plus, it’s not cakey and doesn’t settle into fine lines. <3 it! Again, no kickbacks or affiliate links, but just so it’s easy for you to find, here is where I bought mine.
For those coffee + protein lovers…
Full disclosure: I received this Click coffee + protein powder for free in exchange for my honest review and HERE is my affiliate link. Okay, formalities aside, this is The. Best. Protein. Ever. It is just absolutely scrumptious! And it packs a whopping 25 grams of protein. No joke, I have a shake in the morning and do not get hungry until 11:55am. It’s like a dream!
For those obsessed with pace/distance…
Yeah, so this happened to me recently. I’m usually not totally obsessed with my watch during my run, but I do really like to know when it’s all over, how far I went and how fast, so this was pretty disappointing. Especially since I was really going for it and ran nearly record pace (for a training run) for the first few miles. I guess I’ll have to do it again so I can track it!
For those that <3 anything sparkly…
I love happy (sparkly) mail days! I got home today to find this super sparkly headband (that includes a crown) from Sparkly Soul, Inc. What a great company to be an ambassador for! I’m going to let my daughter wear it tomorrow in the Girls on the Run 5K. I’ll be sporting my Dreamcatcher headband.
For those of you in the midwest dealing with un-spring-like weather…
Yeah, so remember in the previous picture how I mentioned the Girls On the Run 5K that is tomorrow? Looks like fun for 300+ young girls trying to develop a love of running (and for their moms or whoever they are running with). Brisk 43 degrees with 20 mph winds and rain/snow. I love running… I love running…. I love running… I love running….
Happy April Fool’s Day! Today I’m linking up with Deborah and Coco for another Ultimate Coffee Date Linkup!
If we were having coffee…I’d tell you that I’ve been struggling to run lately. I mentioned earlier this week that my husband (who has been running Every. Single. Day. for more than 20 years) has a stress fracture and is unable to run. I know what you’re thinking, he’s the one injured, you can still run. Yeah, it sounds easier than it is. Every time I go run, I can tell it’s like putting salt in his wounds. It’s really hard! He had a conference out of town last week and I ran every day that he was gone, but then fell off again once he returned. I even took my girls along for my cool down mile. I think maybe I’ll take this opportunity to change it up a bit and do some dance cardio or barre-type workout. I know that won’t make him jealous!
If we were having coffee…I’d tell you that my “coffee” this morning is actually in the form of a protein drink. I recently had the opportunity to try a product from Drink Click that is coffee + protein and it is DELICIOUS! If I heat it up, it is just like a latte, but packed with 24 grams of protein! I read an article recently about weight loss/weight maintenance that suggested beginning your day with a breakfast of 30 grams of protein, so I decided to give it a try. I have to tell you that I love it! I honestly do not get hungry before lunch and all I have is the protein drink (mixed with 12 oz of milk). If you are interested, check it out here (this is an affiliate link). Stay on the lookout for a giveaway too!
It’s even frothy like a latte!
If we were having coffee… I’d tell complain to you about our recent tax experience. Not only did we get hit hard with a high balance due (tax guy says to blame it on some of the inheritance stuff from my Father-In-Law’s death last year), but we also got a letter this week from the IRS regarding additional monies owed for 2015 taxes. Way to punch me in the stomach while I was already down. I hate taxes. Okay, venting session over.
If we were having coffee...I’d tell you that I can’t wait for nice weather (consistently nice weather, anyway). I can’t wait until summer activities — going to the river, swimming in the sandpit, camping, maybe a real vacation of some sort… Oh, I can’t wait!
If we were having coffee…I’d tell you that I better sign off, I have a lot to get done today on this rare, free Saturday afternoon. I’d tell you that I promise to meet you here next month and that I’ll have so much to tell you!
Last week I linked up with the TOL group, but had a glitch in my post. So hopefully this week will go better.
I like nice things and top brands, who doesn’t?! But I also am extremely frugalprudent economical when it comes to spending my hard earned dollars. I’m not afraid to admit I LOVE consignment shops — brick and mortar consignment is my preference, but I can online shop with the best of them. Some of my greatest purchases have been from small town consignment shops. I have a pair of Stuart Weitzman heels that I paid less than $20 for and a mint condition Kate Spade tote that I bought for under $100. These products are 100% genuine and purchased in tiny towns that the shop owner just didn’t know what they had. I almost felt guilty for paying so little! I also should confess that I have a notion to go to garage sales. I once purchased a pair of suede TOMS wedges (never been worn!) for $2!
I really want to get my CPT through NASM. I’ve never even said this phrase out loud, so this is a big step for me. I’m hesitant because of a) the cost (see #2 above about being cheap) and b) what do I want to do once I have it? I think that I’d continue to do what I’m doing (working full time in a career outside of fitness) but that I’d work to build an online platform that has some credibility behind it. Anyway, step one is to say it out loud and now I have!
I’m giving up on training for the half marathon that I was planning on running on May 7. First, I had Plantar Fasciitis and took 2 weeks off. Then, I struggled to get my mileage back up. Finally, I registered for this race because my husband registered as well. He now has a stress fracture and can’t run. I know it will be like putting salt in a wound if I run it and he has to watch from the sidelines. I feel a little like a quitter, but I’m going to bow out now and train for something that my heart is in.
That’s about all the randomness that I have for today. If you’ve gotten to this far, thanks for sticking with me! I’m linking up with Amanda at Running With Spoons, so head over there and comment away!
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned my obsession love of the color pink in previous posts, but if you follow me on any social media platform, my username is Pinkess1, so that should be the first clue. Since I was a little girl (when I first got the nickname Pinkess) and now into my thirties, I have never wavered on my favorite color. As silly as it sounds, pink just makes me happy. I have pink sticky notes on my desk at work — even pink staples in my work stapler (which a surprising amount of people actually notice!). My finger nails are one shade of pink as I type this post and my toe nails are a different shade. Pink is my neutral, my base, my starting point. Sure, I like other colors and I don’t have to wear pink every. single. day.
Okay, so I’m not actually doing a blog post solely on my love of the color pink. It is just the intro to a giveaway that I’m participating in.
I am excited to announce that I’m participating in my first ever Instagram Loop Giveaway — Yay, me! I’ve partnered up with Fit and Flirty Closet plus 11 others that love PINK as much as I do for an awesome gift pack valued at $150! To enter the Pretty In Pink giveaway, simply check out this Instagram post to get started.
The prize pack includes some super cute fashion and fitness accessories all in PINK! The following boutiques participated:
I’ve been drinking protein shakes for the last 10 days in the mornings after my run. The chocolaty goodness packs a full 25 grams of protein and actually keeps me full until lunch! I am super psyched to have just been given this new type of Protein + Coffee goodness by Drink CLICK. It tastes just like a latte but with the benefits of the protein. Can. Not. Go. Wrong. with that combo! Get yours here (at my affiliate link).
The Long Run: I’ve been struggling to run lately. It all started with taking two weeks off due to my Plantar Fasciitis. Right after that, my runner husband found out he has a stress fracture, which means he can’t run. And when he can’t run — look out! So I have this guilt when I go run that I’m just adding salt to his wounds… I will have to get over it because I registered for a half in May and I must get moving along on my training!
And on one final random note, let’s talk about hair for a minute. I know, random, right?! I received this Kenra Brightening mask from Influenster to test and review. I used it for several weeks before taking my “after” photo. The stuff actually works! Now, I still have an appointment next Friday for highlights, but I would definitely recommend this product. The deep purple mask helps remove the brassiness. Don’t beleive me, check out these pictures!
I wish I may, I wish I might, have this wish I wish tonight….
Oh what would I wish for if given three running wishes?!
For it to be easy: I know, I know. There is nothing wrong with having to work hard and I know that running isn’t supposed to be easy. However, here is my reasoning: if it were easy, I would be less likely to dread my run, I would probably do more running, faster running, and be a better overall runner. (Yes, that was just one wish)
To be feared fast: My husband is an elite runner and people at races always know his name and his records, etc. Just once, I’d like people to say that about me, “oh, Megan’s here, I don’t have a shot at winning now.” (this one might end up on the Runfessions post; it’s a little embarrassing!)
To be a running coach: I wish I was a running coach and could do it as my career. I love helping people achieve their fitness goals. I’ve looked into certifications, but just haven’t put the time and money into moving that forward. Maybe writing it down for the world to see will help…
What would you wish for if you had three running wishes?
My daughter recently got a perm and for someone who is pretty much a minimalist when it comes to styling her hair (she’s been a big fan of the ponytail), it has taken some getting used to.
My one condition before agreeing to the perm was that she had to do a better job of brushing her hair in the mornings and that likely she would need to wet it down every morning.
You can see why….
This is how she wakes up (some mornings it doesn’t include the smile)
You can see that the curls not only need brushed, but also need revived. We’ve tried mousse and gel and both seem to work about equally. I typically help her apply the product so that she doesn’t get globs of it in one spot.
What might we find in there?!
When I had the opportunity from Brandbacker to sample products aimed at curly hair, I jumped at the chance. Especially, when the opportunity featured hair care products specially designed for kids.
We received Curl Conditioner, Curl Leave-in spray, and Curl Gel Cream all from SoCozy. SoCozy not only are tailord for kids, offering salon-quality hair care products developed specifically for kids’ hair, but they also cater to busy moms. The products are multi purpose and streamline the process. Oh, and I should mention that they smell DE-vine. The gel and the conditioner are scented like sweet cream — yummy!
This is our after photo. We were in kind of a hurry after her shower, so her hair is still a little damp, but you can see that it did revive her curls. It also kept her hair managable and without frizz for the entire night.
SoCozy prides itself on pure and safe products, therefore they are made without parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic color, propylene glycol. Free of alcohol, gluten, wheat, peanuts and tree nuts.
SoCozy products are available at Target, CVS, and Walgreens and if you purchase any of their products from now, through mid-February, you can register your receipt into their sweepstakes for a chance to win an all-expense paid 5 days, 4 nights, deluxe family vacation for four! Visit their website for details!
Do your kids have curly hair (natural or permed)? I’d love to hear your tips on how to keep the curls vibrant!
Until Next Time,
