Refuel with Hemp

**I received these Hemp Heart Bars from Manitoba Harvest through my role as a Sweat Pink Ambassador. As always, all opinions are my own**

If you have not heard of hemp and all the amazing ways to use it, you should check out Manitoba Harvest’s website where they detail so many handy (and delicious) ways it can be used! You have heard of super foods, well this is a super plant! You can use the entire plant for things without any waste! It can be used for items such as clothing and building materials as well as food items.

Enter in: Hemp Heart Bars. These little bars pack 10 grams of plant-based protein and 10 grams of omegas – plus they pack 4 grams of fiber! They are the perfect pre- or post-workout snack.

I received a sample of the chocolate and a sample of the apple cinnamon. Now, I’d love to tell you that they are a delightful snack and that I could eat an entire box in one sitting. My favorite part about the bars is that they are chewy and really satiating. My only gripe is that they kinda taste like birdseed (or at least what I imaging birdseed tasting like). Now, don’t get me wrong, because of the protein and omega benefits, I would still add them to my list for the perfect post workout re-fuel snack. I think the flavor will grow on me.

If you are curious to try them I have two ways that you can get your hands on some. The first is using this 15% off discount code hhbarlaunch1015 by March 31, 2016. The second is to enter Manitoba Harvest’s monthly photo contest. Simply post a photo on Instagram of how you’re fueled by Hemp (use hashtag #fuelledbyhemp (yes, with two ‘l’s) and tag @manitobaharvest. They pick a winner monthly!

This is not my first try at Hemp products. In fact, Manitoba Harvest sent me a sample of Hemp Hearts about a year ago. They were delicious! You can see my review here.  I’ve also tried the Hemp Protein (also from Manitoba Harvest) and it is by far my favorite hemp product to date.

Have you tried any Hemp products? What are your thoughts?

Product Review – Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Mascara

I received a sample of this product complimentary from Influenster for testing and review purposes. As always, all opinions are my own.

Love the packaging on this @marcbeauty mascara that I received from @influenster! #VelvetNoir #contest

A photo posted by Megan (@pinkess1) on

Mascara is one of those products that once you start using it (which I crazily didn’t do until college!) you can never go back! My look just doesn’t feel complete until I have at least one coat of mascara on — even on those days where I’m aiming for an Au natural look.

That being said, I have tried about a bazillion (yes, I’m using a little creative freedom with a made up word to mean “a very large unspecified number” according to Merriam) types of mascara. As someone who subscribes to several different beauty boxes and is also a fan of beauty samples with purchase such as the Clinique Bonus, I always have a ton of sample sized mascaras of various brands laying around. One of my favorites is Benefit They’re Real that I received in my Birchbox many moons ago.

Anyway, on to my product review! I was one of the lucky handful of Influensters to receive the Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in black before it hit the markets! First of all, I must talk about the packaging. It is truly exquisite. The geometric shaped tube, while it adds an air of sophistication, it also makes handling and application easier.

TheMarc Jacobs Velvet Noir next feature worth mentioning is the brush. It is not only very full bristled, but it also has a unique shape that allows you to reach the middle lashes and side lashes at the same time!

Finally, I’ll note that I really only need one coat of this mascara. It does a great job of coating my lashes and adding volume as well as length. My only complaint is that sometimes by the end of the day (depending on the eye cream that I used that morning) the mascara tends to bleed at my lower lash line. If I use a matte eye cream or one that isn’t super hydrating, this does not happen. Adding a bit of powder over the top of my eye cream seems to work as well, so maybe it’s my eye cream and not my mascara??!!

Overall, this mascara will be making my list of favorites for the next time that I need to purchase a full size tube (meaning: if I ever run out of my endless supply of samples!)

Do you have a favorite mascara? If so, I’d love to hear about what brand and why it tops your list!

Until Next Time,
Meg

#BuluBox Review and Special Offer!

*I received a free Bulu Box from Sweat Pink through my participation in the Ambassador Program. I was not compensated in any other way for this post. All opinions are my own.

Fist of all, who knew that Bulu Box is located in Lincoln, NE?! As a fellow Nebraskan, I am extremely excited and honored to share my review of their service. Second, I LOVE the packaging — how motivational!

What it is: Bulu Box is a subscription service that offers monthly delivery of a box filled with 4-5 premium samples (and sometimes full-sized products) to your mailbox. The samples are geared towards wellness, fitness, health, and/or weight loss.

This is not a new concept, Birchbox (which I believe to be the first subscription box service) launched in 2010 and since then, the trend has taken off. There seems to be a subscription box service to meet all needs. The idea is to allow subscribers to sample products to determine if they want to purchase full sized products later, rather than wasting money on a full sized product only to discover it didn’t work/didn’t like it/etc. Enter Bulu Box in 2012 as the first subscription service to target health and health related items, such as vitamins.

What it costs: Most subscription box services range from $10-$40 monthly and Bulu Box does not deviate from that range, coming in at only $10 per month for a 1, 3, or 6 month subscription (and that includes shipping). It is slightly cheaper if you opt for a 12 month subscription. **Use code: SWEATPINK to save 50% on a 3 month subscription!

What’s inside: Each box contains 4-5 samples of various products targeting general health and wellness. *Note: you can also subscribe to a weight loss box that is specifically targeted towards weight loss. The products sent are based on the subscriber’s profile so  boxes will vary among subscribers.

Here are the items that I received:

As promised, 4-5 sample-sized products (plus one full sized and one Lifestyle Bonus)

I tried these before a long run and was surprised that I didn’t get a side ache (you have to eat the entire package -11 gummies 20 minutes prior to exercise).

These are the tastiest vitamins EVER! But I wouldn’t expect less from Martha Stewart!

Have you tried Bulu Box? If so, what did you get in  your last box? Do you subscribe to any other monthly box services? I’m a sucker for them and have tried quite a variety. I’d love to hear your favorite services.

Don’t forget, you can save 50% on a 3 month subscription to Bulu Box by using code SWEATPINK at checkout!

Until Next Time,
Meg

Snacks!

I’m the first to admit, I love snacks. There is just something about the word “snack” that makes my eyes light up and my saliva glands get all worked up! Now, though I have yet to try it, I discovered Fit Snack via Erica Finds. Fit Snack is a subscription service that provides a healthy way for people who are on the go, to have guilt-free snacks on-hand. You get a monthly box packed with snacks, free music downloads, and free workouts. Check them out at www.fitsnack.com.

You can order a single month, 3 month, 6 month, or annual subscription. The price is a bit higher than the subscription boxes that I am used to, but it looks like you get A LOT of items packed in each box (see the image below), so it is likely worth the nearly $25 per month (that price includes shipping).

You all know how much I like subscription boxes (stay tuned for my Bulu Box review coming soon)! Right now, via Erica Finds, you can enter to win a FitSnack box.

If you’re not into ordering a snack box to help you maintain healthy eating throughout each day, here are my recommendations for go-to, waist healthy snacks:

  • Apples and Almond Butter (or regular ol’ peanut butter, if you prefer)
  • Sliced banana on whole wheat/grain bread with peanut butter
  •  Jiff Bars (can you tell that I. Love. Peanut Butter?
  • Kind Bars
  • Protein shake or a smoothie
  • I’m also a HUGE fan of PopChips, but I don’t actually classify them as a healthy snack.

What is your favorite snack? Don’t forget to head over to Erica Finds blog and enter her giveaway!

Until Next Time,
Meg

Get Your Freekeh On: Product Review and Giveaway!

I received a sample of Freekeh through my association with SweatPink and FitApproach. Other than free product, I was not compensated for this post. As always, all opinions are my own.

By now I am sure you’re asking, “what the freekeh is Freekeh?” Well, according to their websiteFreekeh is a process which means “to rub” in Arabic. Freekeh was created by accident nearly 2,000 years ago when a Middle Eastern village was attacked and their crop of young green wheat was set ablaze. Most folks would sulk over their misfortune, but the crafty villagers rubbed off the chaff, cooked it up and “Eureka!” Freekeh was created.

Freekeh boasts 6 grams of protein and 4 grams of dietary fiber per serving, so it is very filling. It is also non-GMO verified.

I tried Freekeh Original and Tamari. They also have Rosemary Sage (which I think sounds Uh-mazing!) The Tamari has only a subtle flavor and can be used a base in anything or eaten on it’s own. If you like rice and quinoa, you will love Freekeh! We used it as a side dish with salmon, as a salad topper, and also as a base in stir-fry.

I am already picturing using this instead of brown rice in my special recipe jambalaya that I make in the fall and winter! **Recipe coming soon**

Freekeh is very versatile and can be used in a variety of dishes. They have a handy cookbook (that you have a chance to win below) plus there are a lot of recipe ideas on their Pinterest boards as well.

As a side dish

as a base in shrimp and veggie stir fry

I even used it as a topping for my salad the next day!

Freekeh Foods was kind enough to allow me to give away a copy of their cookbook along with a package of Freekeh in your choice of flavor! Enter below and stay tuned!

Have you ever tried Freekeh? What recipe are you dying to try?

PEZ Hedz: Bring on The Nastalgia!

*I was compensated for this post by PEZ. All Opinions are my own

Do you remember PEZ candies? I mean, I know they still make the dispensers and all, but the popularity isn’t what it once was (they have been around for approximately 50 years). Though, I must say, being from a family of self-proclaimed candy connoisseurs, my children (ages 7 and 11) do know what PEZ candies are and how to work the dispensers, BAM!

Also on that note, I think they are making a come-back! I recently had the opportunity to try a new product from PEZ called PEZ Hedz. These soft candy chews come in a variety of flavors (think: cherry/blueberry/strawberry, peach/raspberry/strawberry).

We got to try both the Hello Kitty and the Bearz. The candies themselves are about as big as a fifty cent piece (just sticking with the vintage theme). They are gluten free, vegetarian, gelatin free, and 99% fat free. Plus, for those of you with nut allergies or those that pack a dessert item in their children’s lunchbox, they are also peanut free (so your kids could take them to school!)

We enjoyed our PEZ Hedz during Family Movie Night (along with popcorn, of course!). We also enjoyed them in the car on the way to take a load of belongings to storage for the big move (more on that in a future post).

Here is the reaction after the first bite:

We give them a thumbs UP!

Verdict: They are DELISH!

You can purchase PEZ Hedz online at Pez.com or at select Walgreens, Rue 21, Dylan’s, Dollar Tree, Toys R Us, among several others.

What are some of your favorite candies from when you were young? Do you still have any of your old PEZ dispensers? Have you tried PEZ Hedz?

Until Next Time,
Meg

*Again, I was compensated by PEZ for this post, however all opinions are my own

Warm Up With Matcha

I don’t know about where you are, but here we are having a mid-May Spring Snowstorm! So, to warm up, I decided to have some Matcha Tea. Have you tried it?

This Matcha Tea Is by Matcha Organics. It is 100% pure organic. The claims behind Matcha include increased focus, better memory, it blocks fat, stimulates metabolism, lowers cholesterol, fights cancer, has many antioxidants, and much more. Sound too good to be true? We will have to see! I have been drinking it, somewhat irregularly, over the last few weeks. I have yet to try some of the recipes that include Matcha Lattes among others. But I do plan to try some — like these delicious desserts!

The first time I tried it, I did not put anything in it except for the water. I’m not going to lie it pretty much smelled and tasted like grass. I added a bit more water and it was something that I could drink. Most recently I’ve been drinking it with a bit of honey and it is pretty darn good! Plus with all the health benefits, I feel like I would keep drinking it regularly even if it wasn’t the tastiest.

It says you only need a 1/2 tsp. each day for the benefits, so one package lasts a really long time!

You add just a tad bit of the nearly boiling water and create a paste. Don’t smell it too closely or you might not be too tempted to taste it!

I like how it froths like a latte!

If you’d like to try Matcha Organics, you can get 40% off with this code: 5SJLCMMW

*I received this product from Tomoson for testing purposes. As always, all opinions are my own

Have you tried Matcha? What are your favorite ways to use it?

Find Your Balance With pHenOH 7.4

Balance as defined by a quick Google search: a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions

I like this definition because it works for intangible and hard to measure items like work, life, family, etc. But I think Ellen DeGeneres defines it best: “My point is, life is about balance. The good and the bad. The highs and the lows. The pina and the colada.”

Balance is something that I think everyone strives for. Whether it be work-life balance, a balanced diet, or a balanced budget, we all want it! I’ve been told that there is no such thing as a balanced life, but I’m not sure I buy that philosophy. If you’re happy, if your family is happy, and your boss is happy — I’d say you’re onto something!

However, rather than draft a blog post to help you master the balanced life,I’m instead going to introduce you to a balanced pH — how you get it and why you would want it.
phenohThe balance of acidity to alkalinity in our bodies is called pH which stands for potential of hydrogen. Now, I’m not sure you recall from your junior high school science class, but neutral pH is 7.0 (on a scale of 0-14, where the lower the number, the higher the acidic levels and the higher the number indicates high alkalinity). Our bodies are acidic, no doubt about it. To further compound the problem, many foods in today’s diets add more acid to the body. Even exercise adds acid to the body. High acidity can cause multiple health issues, including major diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease! There are many natural things you can do to maintain a balanced pH. One is drinking plenty of water (water has a pH of 7 – completely neutral). Another is to limit processed foods. Depending on whether your body is too acidic or too high in alkaline, there are foods you can eat to help add balance. There is also Alkaline Water and now, the first all natural, healthy Alkaline Sports Drink, pHenOH 7.4.

phenoh
pHenOH 7.4 is the first sports drink that is targeted at balancing your body’s pH levels. With only 7 natural ingredients, it is not full of sugars, corn syrups, or other hard to pronounce ingredients. It only has 30 calories per 8 oz. serving. It’s refreshing and goes well, not only after an intense workout, but also as a go-to beverage during the day. My husband has been drinking it after his interval days and I drink it after my daily runs whether or not they are super hard and intense. Then I take the remainder of my bottle to work with me to finish later in the day.

IMG_3456.JPG

It’s not overly sweet, as it is sweetened with natural agave, but it does have a smooth taste to it. Plus, their promotional brochure is super cute!

I like the pictures they used in their brochure!

What helps you find balance – in life, work, or body? Have you tried pHenOH 7.4 or any of the alkaline waters on the market?

Dandelion Root Tea: Product Review

I had heard that you could use dandelions for various ailments but had never tried them for anything. You can actually use the dandelions that grow in your own yard! Since this is my first experience, I’m glad that I let someone else do the growing, picking, and preparing. Plus, who doesn’t love tea?!

I received some Organic Dandelion Root Tea from Kiss Me Organics to review and I was pleasantly surprised. I mean, not to judge a tea by its name, but dandelion roots? Not exactly appetizing!  In addition to the dandelion roots, the tea also contains hibiscus and cinnamon. The tea is subtle and not overpowering. I can taste the cinnamon, but it blends well with the other flavors. I even tried this tea iced and it was good!

There are so many health benefits to such a variety of teas that are on the market today. What is that saying? A few of cups of tea a day keep the doctor away. Okay, that isn’t actually how it goes, but you have to agree that you have heard many claims of health benefits of drinking tea.

The claims with this tea are that it helps support a healthy digestion and aids in liver and kidney detox. It also can aid in stabilizing blood sugar, regulating blood pressure and cholesterol, and is full of antioxidants.  I can’t tell you if it’s doing any of those things for me or not, but I can tell you it is a very delicious tasting tea and I will continue to drink it. The health benefits are just icing on the cake!

In addition to learning about how you can use dandelion roots to make tea, I also learned that you can cook with dandelion root. Now, if you’re a little worried about picking a dandelion out of your back yard and then adding it to whatever you’re cooking, you are not alone! The good news is that Kiss Me Organics have a book of recipes, including this one below for Avocado Mayonnaise, using dandelion root tea (you just cut open the tea bag and dump it in)!

dandelion tea

Whether or not I have convinced you to give this tea a try, at least I might have convinced you that dandelions are more than just an annoying weed! If you are interested in trying it out, you can purchase it on Amazon and Kiss Me Organics has a 100% money back guarantee!

I received this product through BrandBacker from Kiss Me Organics to sample and review. I was not compensated in any other way besides a free product. As always, all opinions are my own.

Product Review: Hyperbiotics ProDental

Hyperbiotics Pro-DentalThere is a lot of buzz about probiotics and how beneficial they are to your health. While I’m not a skeptic (I’m sure they are helpful to the digestive system) I am also not a trend hopper. I didn’t run out and stock up just because of all the recent news. However, when I recently had the opportunity to sample Hyperbiotics ProDental tablets that are formulated for oral health, I jumped at the chance. In general, probiotics are considered “good” bacteria. The primary health benefits are that they help to lower the amount of “bad” bacteria in your gut and the claim is that they help fight off infection. There has also been research that shows how probiotics have helped with other ailments not related to the gut, such as eczema. Pro-Dental targets issues related to the mouth such as bad breath, sensitive teeth, allergies, etc.

I have been using the chewable tablets for a week and have not noticed a major difference, however I do suffer from tooth sensitivity so I plan to continue to use the tablets in hopes that they will help with that. The tablets are chewable, but I recommend just allowing them to dissolve rather than chew them. I don’t care for the taste of them when I chew them. That being said, they do take a while to dissolve, so I take mine in the morning after brushing my teeth and let it dissolve on my way to work. You can take 2-3 tablets each day. The website claims that results can happen as soon as 7 days with consistent use. I might up my dose to see if I have better results. I will keep you posted!

Until Next Time,
Meg

I received these products complimentary through Brandbacker from InstaNatural for testing and review purposes. All opinions are my own.
