Summer Fun Workouts

Today I’m linking up with Annmarie at The Fit Foodie, Nicole at Fitful Focus, Michelle at Fruition Fitness, and Jen at Pretty Little Grub for the Wild Workout Wednesday Linkup!

Working out in the summer has its ups and downs. For instance, I love that the sun is up earlier so I can get my morning run in during daylight. However, I don’t like that if I don’t get said run in during the wee morning hours that it’s 100 degrees by the time I get off work.

I also love that most of the outdoor activities that we do in the summer sneakily are mini workouts as well!

This weekend, I finally got to try Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP). You guys, if you have not tried it, it is So. Much. Fun. I didn’t even fall off (which surprises certain people that know me!). It is also a great core and arm workout — without you even knowing it!

My debut on the Paddleboard

My blister AKA Badge-of-Fun from my recent paddleboarding and kayaking experiences

I should warn you, if you do too much paddleboarding all at once, you might end up with blisters like I did! I also paddled around the lake in a kayak (also my first time). That was a lot of fun as well and I’ve added both a kayak and a paddleboard to my list of WANTS.

We spend a lot of time at the lake in the summer… jumping off the dock, swimming, playing “keep-away” with the beach ball, etc. all of which equate to a pretty good (non-sweat-filled) workout.

We like to rate eachother’s jumps off the dock — I think this one got me a 9.2

Two weeks ago, my daughters, husband, and I headed to the river and played what we like to call “sand-bar, no-rules soccer.” That is a lot of work! The sand feels hard on the top and just when you think you have your footing to take off at a sprint, you don’t and you just spin out and look silly. Sorry, I don’t have any pictures or videos of that!

What fun summer activities do you do that turn into mini-workouts? Have you tried SUP?

Remember to stop by the linkup and comment on some posts!

Five Things Friday: Wellness & Fitness Edition

Welcome FRIDAY! Whew, it has been a week! Am I right or am I right? This week’s Five focuses on fitness & wellness trends in 2017.

**All opinions are just that, opinions!**2017 Fitness & Wellness TrendsSupplements: I don’t see supplements going away any time soon. In fact, I see new formulas popping up All. The. Time. Whether the supplements be for better nutrients, electrolytes, boost immunity, boost stamina — they will continue to be relevant throughout 2017 (and beyond!) I recently received a jar of HANAH One – a botanical supplement – to sample and review. The claim is that it helps with focus, balance, mindfulness, immunity, the works! The trick is that you have to use it daily and it tastes pretty bad (sorry, just being honest!) I have found that when I mix it in with a fairly strong flavored herbal tea, the wangy (yes, I just made that a word) flavor is much less noticeable. I’m going to keep using it to see if I see the benefits (which usually are noticeable after 7 days of continued use, according to their website.) Stay tuned!

Athleisure: aka – leggings all day, every day! Okay, for those of us that can’t get away with leggings daily at the office, be on the lookout for work appropriate athleisure. Think: dress pants in sweat-wicking fabric (perfect for a quick lunch hour workout). Well + Good calls it: Workleisure!  I ran across this brand (that I have yet to try) that offers a variety of dress pant yoga jeans – wait, what?! Yes Please!

Workleisure

Fitness Trackers: These babies are not only not going away, there are becoming more and more options on the racks, from the Fitbit (whatever the latest model is) to the Apple Watch to the new Garmin Fenix (which I. Must. Get.) These devices can tell you nearly anything you’d want to know about your body. Down to the VO2 max. The best thing about them is that it doesn’t matter your fitness level, there is a device for everyone! Even the fashion industry has jumped on the bandwagon!

I get giddy when I get 100% on my Jawbone UP Move

Clean Beauty: I know I am focusing on fitness and wellness, but I’d be remiss not to include at least one beauty item in my post! The trend of knowing all the ingredients in your makeup, skincare, and hair products is here. It kind of started with the sulfate-free products and has gained some traction. Now there are whole lines of products using the phrase “non-toxic” on their marketing materials, from nail polish to foundation to eye cream.

Unique Spins on Old Workouts: I’m an ambassador for Sweat Pink and right now we are right in the middle of a HIIT Yoga Challenge. Who knew that yoga could also work for High Intensity Interval Training? Check out the Fit Approach Instagram feed for the next week to see how!

I’d love to hear your predictions for trends in 2017!

Until Next Time!
Meg

Friday Favorites

Good morning friends! It has been a loooooonnnnnnggggg time! To get back in the groove, I thought I’d try something easy like a favorites post. The list includes many products that I’ve received lately complimentary, however all opinions are my own.

Happy Friday all!

Here are some products that I’m loving now — in no particular order.

Who knew that Cetaphil made moisturizer?! When I first went to a dermatologist at age 14, the only product that he recommended by name was Cetaphil face wash. While I’m not one to use only one product (I have to try everything) I always come back to  Cetaphil when I have issues, especially any sort of dryness. It is the most gentle product out there. As for the moisturizer, ditto. It is gentle and non-irritating to my acne-prone skin and it works really well to hydrate without the shine.  *disclaimer: I received this product from Influenster in exchange for an honest review.

I LOVE these Kushy Foot socks. I received an assortment in the mail awhile back and have managed to try out all the styles. The socks are made with a support fabric in the middle to provide arch support. I really like the dress socks and the athletic socks. I’m not wild about the yoga socks, but it could be one of two things: 1) The socks were for sizes 9-11 and I wear a 7.5 or 2) I’m not used to socks that separate my toes. The others, though fit pretty well and seemed to do the job of cushioning my run and my dress shoes.

Okay, with Superbowl Sunday coming up in T minus 2 days, I have to include a snack that, while not healthy, is super delicious and perfect for the big game. I received a bag of Oreida Tater Tots from Influenster and was challenged to create some recipes. One of the featured recipes was Totchos (get it? Nachos, but with tater tots?!) My husband and I crafted our one-dish Totcho recipe using black beans, jalapenos, colby-jack, hamburger, onions, and black olives. They were delightful! Later, we tried to make burritos using the same ingredients and they were equally as delicious!

PS: GO PANTHERS!

And finally, I love SNOW DAYS! We had two this week with well over a foot and a half of snow and 60 mph wind gusts. We made snow ice cream, snow angels, and lots of hot chocolate!

I hope you have a wonderful Friday. What are some of your favorite things? Who are you rooting for on Sunday?

Until Next Time,
Meg

2016 – Let’s Do This!

I’m sure we have all set our New Year’s Resolutions and among those resolutions there is bound to be a goal or two surrounding fitness. If you’re like me, you set relatively the same goals each year. Maybe you stick to them, maybe you modify them, or maybe you totally let them go by the wayside. No matter what happens, the new year rolls around and I always set them again. I’ll save my goals for 2016 for another post, because to tell you the truth, I’m still tweaking them a bit.

In the mean time, here is a quick resource to help you stick to your fitness resolutions. Especially if you are the type that needs variety in your routine rather than someone who is content to practice the same fitness routine day after day without boredom.

1280-720A few months ago, I partnered with Booya Fitness to produce a suggested exercise regimen for the person with a super busy schedule. I originally titled it, “The Busy Mom’s Workout”, but since it is not gender specific, nor do you have to have kids to do the workout, I have since dropped the “mom” from the title. The way that Booya works, is that you buy a workout that guides you through 7-14 days. You can pick cardio, strength, yoga, specific muscle groups , etc. The workouts are super low cost and low commitment.

Now is a great time to sign up with Booya Fitness because starting on January 11, they will be doing a Resolution Challenge and offering tons of prizes! Sign up with Booya Fitness anytime before January 10, 2016 and the challenge details will be announced on January 11, 2016!

Awesome prizes + a hot bod?! Yes please! Start the #ResolutionChallenge with @booyafitness and I!… Click To Tweet

Take a look at the promo video here:

We will do this together and have a GREAT 2016!

Until Next Time,
Meg

Do you suffer from long run anxiety?

My heart is racing, my stomach feels queasy, my skin is tingling, and I can feel it in my toes. No, I’m not on the starting blocks for a televised race – I am prepping for my long run. My heart starts to flutter even days away as I think about the 12 miles that I will run this Friday as part of my half marathon training.

Last week for my 10 miler, I had trouble falling asleep the night before. I found myself lying there and scolding myself in my head about how hard it would be to run a quality run of any distance on little sleep. I had my running clothes laid out and ready, a morning snack prepped, I drank plenty of water throughout the day – I was ready, but I was nervous.

In the end, my 10 mile run last Friday was great. I felt like my pace was decent and that I could have possibly gone one or two more miles. I didn’t feel tight and anxious the entire 10 miles. In fact, the nerves subsided soon after I began. So why am I already sweating (figuratively and literally) my upcoming 12 mile run that is still two days away? And even more to the point, do these nerves help me or hurt me in my training?

Here is my not-a-licensed-psychologist theory: It won’t hurt my training as long as my nerves don’t turn into dread and if they do, as long as they don’t turn into dread before every workout and every long run as long. Jitters are okay, dread is another story. It is also a good sign that my nerves calm as soon as I start running. The nerves can be parlayed into adrenaline and used as fuel for my runs. One more plus, by the time race day is here, I will be an expert at dealing with the pre-run jitters.

Do you get anxiety before a tough workout? How do you handle it?

Until Next Time,
Meg

10 Minutes Is All You Need

I’m linking up today with Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy for the Fit Dish Link-Up. Today’s optional topic is: If you only have 10 minutes, how do you fit in something healthy?

I love this topic, because the most common excuse for people to skip exercise or don’t pack a healthy lunch (me included) is “I don’t have time.”  As a mom working a full time job outside of the home, I have just as many time suckers as the next person. Yet, my health is a priority and so I find ways to sneak fitness and healthy habits into each day.

That being said, I know that if I don’t get my workout done first thing in the morning before my kids get up and the craziness of the day begins, I know I’m in trouble. So my blog post will be this scenario: I slept through my alarm, my girls are up and hungry…I’m hungry too. So, I skip my morning run, promising myself that I’ll get it in later. Later comes and it is now 97 degrees outside and I know it won’t be cooling off until somewhere in the neighborhood of 3am at which point I will not be running!

Rather than skip exercising completely and having that guilty feeling all day long, I enlist my girls to do a quick work out with me. They love doing work outs that we find online or we make up our own (see below). They have even created their own workout videos, see Ava’s here!

A couple of my favorite online resources are Amanda Russell and POPSugar Fitness. On both sites, you can find a variety of workouts whether you’re looking for a certain length of time or whether you’re looking to work a certain body part – they have a huge variety.

For today’s scenario, my girls and I came up with our own 10 minute, full body circuit. Here it is!

10 minute full body circuit

How do you fit in something healthy if all you have is 10 minutes? I’d love to hear what you think of our 10 minute circuit!

Until Next Time,
Meg

What Makes A Woman Inspiring?

The Fit Dish Linkup

I’m linking up today with Jill Conyers and Jessica Joy for the weekly #FitDish Linkup. The optional topic today is, “What makes a woman inspiring”?

To me, a woman (or any person, really) is inspiring when they do what they do for the sole sake of getting it done and not for the sake of glory, credit, or pats on the back. When doing the right thing is the only thing and it comes naturally.

I am inspired by strong women who have the respect of others that you can see when she walks into a room. That kind of respect is so clearly earned that one would have to be inspired by it. When she speaks her mind, people actually listen and take stock in her opinions — that is inspiring.

I’m also inspired by the woman who is able to do it all — the daily workout, the healthy eating for the entire family, the regular blogging, the full time job, being a good parent, has polite kids,…. does that person exist? Because if so, I truly admire her!

What inspires you? Any inspirational women in your life?

Until Next Time,
Meg

Friday Favorites – What’s in My Gym Bag

Welcome Friday! My weeks feel like they are in rapid-fire mode. I go to work on Monday morning and I look up and it’s Friday. While some would say this is a good thing – it is stressing me out BIG time. There is SO much to do and get done – ahhh!

So, rather than think about that for any longer, I’m going to do a stress free post about my favorite gym bag and what I always put in it for a trip to the gym.

Of course, I always include running shorts, sports bra, socks, running shoes — you know, the basics. But I also have a few other can’t-workout-without-it items.

My gym has free towel service, but I like to bring along my own. Mostly because it has this inspiring quote on it, “Put your heart into it” to push me through a tough interval workout. This towel is by Words to Sweat By.

My must-have accessories include my FlipBelt (I have this in pink too!), a Sparkly Soul headband — of which I have multiple colors because they are The. Best. Headbands. Ever. and are truly non slip and super fashionable. And finally, my old-school Classic iPod.I put audio books on this device and listen as I run. You would be amazed at how many extra miles I’ve put in just to find out “whodunit”.

If I am heading to the gym over my lunch break, I try and squeeze in a shower. Right now I’m trying to use the scents of summer — aka the beach mixed with sun lotion — so I’m loving this Beach Babe Texturizing Hair Bundle that includes shampoo, conditioner, and a sea salt spray that I use to try and mask that I-just-came-from-the-gym-and-am-going-back-to-work look.

And finally, my favorite part — THE BAG! I am a fan of bags, clutches, purses, totes, you get the idea. This is the Augusta Active bag that I won through the SweatPink #NoExcuses Challenge. You can see my winning video submission here. It is nylon, cute, compact but roomy, has a separate compartment for sweaty clothes or shoes, and is just plain fun!

So, what’s in your gym bag? Any essentials that you just can’t leave home without? Any favorite bags that you want to show me?

Until Next Time,
Meg

Friday Favorites

Life In Leggings

Rather than a 5 Things Friday post, I’m calling it Friday Favorites. Mostly because I don’t have 5 things and second, because I want to join the Friday Favorites Link-up hosted by Life In Leggings.

Knock Knock Journals – the inner truth series
Seriously, I don’t think I have to explain why I love these journals. They are so fun and unexpected. Who wouldn’t love journaling with one of these babies?! Here are two of my favorites.

Popcorn
I’m pretty sure I’ve expressed my obsession with popcorn on this blog, but if not I. Love. Popcorn. We have a Family Movie Night weekly tradition and it always involves popcorn. I took my littles to the movies last weekend just because I was craving movie theater popcorn. Safe to say, “my name is Megan and I’m a popcorn-aholic”…

popcornAgusta Active Duffel Bag
I won this bag from a #SweatPink Challenge earlier this year. I love it! It is the perfect size for a gym bag (I have it crammed full of stuff now because I insist on using it as an overnight bag as well). It has a separated compartment for shoes or sweaty gym clothes and it’s just so fun! PS: it also comes in pink!Okay, I know this is short and sweet, but it’s what I’m loving right at THIS moment! Have a good weekend! What were your favorites from the week?

Who Would You Want To Train With

The Fit Dish Link-Up

I’m a little late to the Tuesday Link-up, but I figure better late than never, right?! This week’s [optional] theme for the Fit Dish Link-up (hosted by Jill Conyers @JillConyers.com, & Jessica Joy @ TheFitSwitch.org) is on which people you would most like to workout with and/or be trained by. Here are my top three.

Anna Renderer (who I know best from her partnership with PopSugar Fitness)

Anna has such great enthusiasm, she inspires me to not only try new workouts, but also to really give it my all. Plus, she typically has the cutest workout clothes! She would be fun to workout with and try something new!

Jillian Michaels (everyone’s favorite drill sergeant-like trainer)

I have Jillian Michaelsnearly the entire collection of Jillian Michaels workout DVDs. *My favorite is the Yoga Meltdown Her tough-girl approach turns a lot of people off, but I rather like the intensity – she makes me want to finish strong. While I can’t say that I think she would be fun to work out with, I would like to have a training session with her.

Amanda Russell (the former elite runner turned model and Youtube sensation)

If you haAmanda Russell - Fit Strong and Sexyven’t ever heard of Amanda Russell, you should google her. Her story is inspiring. She was an elite runner with her eyes on the Olympics, when she suffered a career ending injury. Rather than fall into a dark place, she found other ways to workout and now inspires hundreds of thousands with her online videos, meal plans, and social media. I like her workouts because they are super quick and effective plus allow for a lot of variation. She is very personable through her social media and responds to facebook posts and tweets. She would be fun to work out with or be trained by!

Who would you like to be trained by or workout with?

Until Next Time,
Meg
