3 Basic Rules for Choosing the Right Outfit for your Workout

With the rising popularity of athleisure plus the acceptance of wearing such things as leggings to work, we have a vast range of choices when it comes to workout garments. Especially when we are looking for pieces that we can wear from the gym to running errands or even on a night out.

From various cuts, fabrics, and fits – choosing appropriate materials that work for a sweat session and double as regular clothes can be difficult. Fitness friends, you know how much goes into mentally preparing and crushing that workout and what you choose to wear can factor into that mindset. Nothing is worse than having your workout completely ruined because of a poor wardrobe choice – Amiright? I’m not only talking to the fashion-conscience individual. In fact, I work out totally alone most of the time in my own basement or on a lonely gravel road – so we’re not talking about setting trends here. What I’m talking about is physical comfort. Being able to crush that workout without a thought of my clothing during said workout. Comfort and support in your clothing choices should always be a priority.

Here are 3 basic rules I follow when selecting my workout clothing:

1. Opt for Sweat-Wicking materials. AKA – avoid the cotton tee or shorts: Cotton absorbs sweat and doesn’t quickly release it through evaporation. Wearing heavy, damp cotton against your skin can give you the chills and cause irritation. There is not enough body glide in the world to convince me to run in cotton shorts!

2. Avoid Wearing Unfamiliar (untested) gear (at least for a major workout): those leggings may look modest when looking into your mirror at home, but it could quickly become X-rated as soon as you bend over to do deadlifts or as you become sweatier throughout the workout, not to mention unknown chafing areas (see point 1 above).

3. Choose items that fit: baggy sweatpants or oversized shirts can catch on exercise machines and equipment. My go-to options for most of my workouts are fitted 3/quarter length pants, slim-fitting long pants or moisture wicking shorts.

Another area worth mentioning is ensuring you have the proper base layer – aka proper undies. Comfort (for both men and women) starts with this layer and getting it wrong will almost always ruin your day, or at the very least, your workout. I usually go with a light-weight, full coverage poly-spandex blend. I like these Randies from Oiselle or Victoria Secret has some as well (I prefer the hiphugger version). For men, I have heard that these boxer briefs from Tommy John are quite comfortable.

I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned my obsession love of the color pink in previous posts, but if you follow me on any social media platform, my username is Pinkess1, so that should be the first clue. Since I was a little girl (when I first got the nickname Pinkess) and now into my thirties, I have never wavered on my favorite color. As silly as it sounds, pink just makes me happy. Sure, I like other colors and I don’t have to wear pink every. single. day.

Five Things Friday: Wellness & Fitness Edition

Welcome FRIDAY! Whew, it has been a week! Am I right or am I right? This week’s Five focuses on fitness & wellness trends in 2017.

**All opinions are just that, opinions!**2017 Fitness & Wellness TrendsSupplements: I don’t see supplements going away any time soon. In fact, I see new formulas popping up All. The. Time. Whether the supplements be for better nutrients, electrolytes, boost immunity, boost stamina — they will continue to be relevant throughout 2017 (and beyond!) I recently received a jar of HANAH One – a botanical supplement – to sample and review. The claim is that it helps with focus, balance, mindfulness, immunity, the works! The trick is that you have to use it daily and it tastes pretty bad (sorry, just being honest!) I have found that when I mix it in with a fairly strong flavored herbal tea, the wangy (yes, I just made that a word) flavor is much less noticeable. I’m going to keep using it to see if I see the benefits (which usually are noticeable after 7 days of continued use, according to their website.) Stay tuned!

Athleisure: aka – leggings all day, every day! Okay, for those of us that can’t get away with leggings daily at the office, be on the lookout for work appropriate athleisure. Think: dress pants in sweat-wicking fabric (perfect for a quick lunch hour workout). Well + Good calls it: Workleisure!  I ran across this brand (that I have yet to try) that offers a variety of dress pant yoga jeans – wait, what?! Yes Please!


Fitness Trackers: These babies are not only not going away, there are becoming more and more options on the racks, from the Fitbit (whatever the latest model is) to the Apple Watch to the new Garmin Fenix (which I. Must. Get.) These devices can tell you nearly anything you’d want to know about your body. Down to the VO2 max. The best thing about them is that it doesn’t matter your fitness level, there is a device for everyone! Even the fashion industry has jumped on the bandwagon!

Clean Beauty: I know I am focusing on fitness and wellness, but I’d be remiss not to include at least one beauty item in my post! The trend of knowing all the ingredients in your makeup, skincare, and hair products is here. It kind of started with the sulfate-free products and has gained some traction. Now there are whole lines of products using the phrase “non-toxic” on their marketing materials, from nail polish to foundation to eye cream.

The Busy Mom’s Manicure

I received this product from Brandbacker for review purposes. I was in no other way compensated for this post. All opinions are my own. 

I love to have my nails done just as much as the next gal, but let’s face it, I don’t have time to paint my nails every other day (that’s about how long painted nails last without chipping on this busy mom) and I certainly don’t have the money (or time) to go to the salon for a gel manicure every two weeks.

When I got the opportunity through Brandbacker to sample imPRESS Press-On Manicure products, I said “YES” wholeheartedly.

They sent me two different colors of pre-painted nails. One set is hot pink and the other is medium beige. Both sets came with the option of having a sparkly accent nail. I decided for my first attempt with the nails to try the beige set. They are super easy to put on. The adhesive is already on each nail, so after laying out the correct size for each of my nails, the whole process took about 6 minutes. Plus – no dry time! It never fails that after I paint my nails, I end up smudging the polish because I can’t sit still long enough for it to thoroughly dry!

To apply, you simply peel off the plastic backing, line up the nail with your nail bed, and press on the nail for about 30 seconds. That is literally it — super easy, no mess, quick application and I have a salon quality manicure for less than $8!

I’ve had the nails on for 4 days without losing one nail. That is 4 days of washing dishes (twice per day by hand), 4 showers, 15 miles of running, one football game, one volleyball game, playing with my kids, using the sewing machine and other crafts, and typing on the keyboard. They are still shiny like a gel manicure and chip-free, of course.

I added sparkly to the remainder of my nails rather than keep the accent nail since it would only fit my pinky finger.

The only thing that I would complain about would be the size choices of the nails. I think my fingers are pretty average and I had trouble finding nails to fit them (most were too small). As you can see from the picture below, the thumb nail that I chose was too small, while the only other option was huge and would have extended over onto my skin. There were tons of small nails to choose from, but little middle ground. In fact, I had to use the accent nail on my pinky since it wouldn’t fit on my ring finger or pointer finger. *I ended up adding sparkles to all my nails with a polish that I already owned rather than keep the pinky as an accent.  
When I’m ready to change out my manicure, I only have to gently peel the nails off — no acetone soak process necessary and no damage to my natural nails! These nails come in a variety of colors and options from french manicures to on-trend colors and patterns. You can pick them up at Walgreens and Walmart.






Overall, I would say that the value of this product is very good. For about the cost of a nice nail polish, you can have a salon quality manicure that lasts in only a few minutes!

Favorite Workout Wear

Oh, I have so many favorites when it comes to the clothes and gear that I wear to work out! I promise to reign it in and only post a few pictures! By the way, I’m linking up today with Jessica Joy and Jill Conyers, who host The Fit Dish Link-Up every Tuesday! Today’s optional topic is to show “flat photos” of your favorite clothing and gear!

Let’s start with what I am loving now (meaning, what do I run in when it is sweltering hot and super humid?). Disclaimer: I should also mention that I’m somewhat of a chicken in terms of running with vehicle traffic and I recently moved away from my beloved running trail (that was just outside my front door) I now have to run on the highway until I can get to a lesser traveled gravel road (lesser traveled, but still traveled). That being said, I like to dress in super bright clothing to make sure I’m VISIBLE! These shorts are my favorite! They are North Face and are super lightweight. I typically pair them with either this plain white Under Armour sleeveless shirt or my #SweatPink burnout tank, my Garmin Forerunner 220 (of course – see my previous post!), a Sparkly Soul headband, a FlipBelt and my Brooks or Asics running shoes.


When the weather starts to get that chill in the morning and I can no longer wear shorts, I turn to my Brooks Equilibrium Capri pants. These pants come just below my knee (I’m 5’6″) and don’t fall down or ride up. I. Love. Them. Outside of that first crisp breath you take on a fall morning, they are my favorite part of autumn running.

Last year was my first winter where I truly embraced the weather and continued to run through (almost) anything that mother nature threw at me. I got a pair of Saucony Nomad (wind resistant) running pants as a Christmas gift from my husband, I have a windbreaker pullover in a bright orange, this Brooks stocking hat, and a neck gator when it was really cold. I’m still in the market for a good pair of gloves or mittens if you have any suggestions!

For those in-between days when it’s cold, but not frigid, I like running tights. I have a great pair of G-Fast from Gap and then the pair shown below from Aeropostale, the hot pink pullover is also from Aeropostale, a VSX sport bra, FlipBelt and multiple Sparkly Soul headbands.


I would also be remiss if I didn’t include my favorite Aspen Yoga Mat that reminds me to stay balanced (figuratively and literally).8c54c-img_07765b15d

Five Things Friday

I have a gazillion bottles of face wash, eye-shadows, have tried every foundation out there, and don’t get me started on shampoos! I subscribe to Birchbox, so you can imagine how many hair and makeup samples I’ve gone through! While I did not get these products from Birchbox, they are a few of my favorites (of the moment anyway!)

As you all know, I have struggled with acne nearly my entire life — including my entire adult life. From over-the-counter to prescriptions, I have tried about every product out their claiming to be the next best thing. I first sampled Murad Acne Clearing Solution when I received it through the StyleHunters program. It is, quite honestly, the best product that I’ve ever used. It works super well on my adult acne, which we all know is different than teen acne. It is not harsh on my skin, but it rapidly clears up any breakouts. I am not being compensated at all — this is my honest opinion. While it is a little pricey ($39) it lasts a long time because a tiny amount is effective.


This J. Crew handbag is my very first purchase from The Fashion Project. This site created a platform to give back while offering gently used designer items at a discounted price to others. Donors choose their charity and when you purchase their item, a portion of the proceeds go towards that charity. What a novel idea! Plus, I got a super good deal on this genuine leather handbag!

I have sensitive skin — aka, acne prone skin, therefore I am always trying to find the best foundation. I like one that provides decent coverage (to cover my uneven skin tone and red marks), I need one that is not oily and doesn’t clog pores, goes on smooth and not cake-y. To say the least, I am kind of picky when it comes to foundation. I went through the Color IQ at Sephora a while back. If you’re not familiar with that, it is when they do a color check on your skin and then give you an ID number that will list a host of foundations in the color that works for you. It’s awesome for those of us that are hours from a Sephora and must order online. For my first order, I went for this Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation. At first glance, it seemed to be really runny and I was worried about the coverage. I have not be a bit disappointed — except to say that I am nearing the end of my bottle. It is a little pricey, but it happened to be cheaper than my previous favorite (Flawless by Laura Mercier). I will definitely be purchasing this again soon!

Another Urban Decay product is on my list of favorites. I love their eye shadow in Sin which is a shimmery champagne color. As you can see I am scraping out every. last. bit. of my little pot! I love how shimmery this is, but yet appropriate for me (in my 30s) to wear to my conservative office. The biggest drawback is that for one little pot of shadow, it is $18 – Yeouch! I think I’ll wait for a coupon and continue on my quest to match the color with a cheaper brand….

IMG_3560.JPGThe final product on my list, is this shampoo and conditioner combination that I received complimentary from Influenster for testing and review purposes. First of all, I am a huge fan of anything with Argan Oil in it. Especially hair products! This soap smells better than most Argan Oil products (it doesn’t smell manly in the least!). Also, and this is probably my favorite feature, with each purchase of these SoapBox products, they donate money to provide clean drinking water to those in need. Each bottle has a unique Hope Code on the back. When you go to the website and enter in the code, it tells you where the impact is being made for your purchase. It’s awesome!

Something else that’s awesome — the quirky way they write the description on the backs of the bottles. Example: “Directions: apply generously to wet hair, massage into a lather, sing your heart out and then rinse.”

Knock Knock Journals – the inner truth series
Seriously, I don’t think I have to explain why I love these journals. They are so fun and unexpected. Who wouldn’t love journaling with one of these babies?! Here are two of my favorites.

I’m pretty sure I’ve expressed my obsession with popcorn on this blog, but if not I. Love. Popcorn. We have a Family Movie Night weekly tradition and it always involves popcorn. I took my littles to the movies last weekend just because I was craving movie theater popcorn. Safe to say, “my name is Megan and I’m a popcorn-aholic”…

It is the perfect size for a gym bag (I have it crammed full of stuff now because I insist on using it as an overnight bag as well). Thursdays Are For Thinking Out Loud

Thinking-Out-Loud2Have I mentioned how much I love the Thinking Out Loud linkup hosted by Amanda at runningwithspoons.com?! Some days, randomness is the only way it’s going to get done!

So, without further adieu….

1. The Job Search
As you all know, I am moving soon (it seemed to be so far into the future, but now it is looming closer and closer!). I have not gone on a major job search, but I have been keeping tabs on LinkedIn and other employment sites for opportunities. I also have reached out to a few key people in the community to which we’re moving to. Last week, I had my first interview in over 10 years. It was a little nerve-racking going in, but when it was over, I felt GREAT!  The interview was 2.5 hours of conversation, sharing experiences, and information gathering in a low stress format. I felt like I totally got the job…. With that being said, it has now been over a week and I have not heard one word from the company. (Sigh)

2. The Headhunters
Speaking of job searches, have you ever had someone reach out to you to try and recruit you? Has it ever been for a position/company that you just didn’t want to work for? I am having a little of that going on as well. On one hand, it feels really nice to be wanted and recognized for my skill set. But on the other hand, it is kind of a dicey situation. I don’t want to make anyone angry as they are community leaders in the town that we are moving to, but by the same token, I just don’t think I’m interested in the type of position they have. I have been working for 2 days to draft a response email that I think will finally go out today. I have delayed sending it in hopes that I would get a job offer from the other company…

3. Running
I’m not sure if I’ve mentioned that I set a goal to run 100 miles in March. I ran 100 in January and then kind of fell off in February, running only about 65. Today, I am at 87 miles with 5 days left, so I know I’ll make it. I have really had to push it this last 2 weeks because of too many days off earlier in the month. I desperately want a rest day, but I just can’t handle being this close and not making it! I think this happened in January as well, which might explain my February lack of mileage. Eventually, I will find a happy medium! I signed up with Run This Year to run 1,000 miles in 2015. I think I’m on track to do so. That is if I don’t burnout first.

4. Chocolate

Cadbury Mini EggsWhy is it that they only break out the Cadbury Mini Eggs at Easter?  If you haven’t tried them, they are seriously the best chocolate ever! Deliciously melting in your mouth – the rich chocolate and the hard candy shell. I love M & Ms, but they don’t hold a candle to these babies. I am absolutely addicted. I guess it’s good that they only sell them at Easter!

5. Recent Purchases
I’ve recently purchased a couple of items that I cannot wait to arrive! Both are from online boutiques that feature gently used designer items. One is from ThredUp and is a Kate Spade Wristlet and the other is from The Fashion Project and is a J Crew structured handbag. I guess I should mention that I’m also obsessed with purses, bags, totes, clutches, etc.

5 Things Friday – In Snapshots

This has been a crazy week. I attribute it to the wild weather pattern that we experienced. We had below 20 degrees with 5-6 inches of snow and a snow day for the kids followed by a 50+ degree day and today it’s nearly 70 degrees. CRAZY!
